Green Facts

Why is now the time to go green with your company’s transportation program? The transportation you use makes a difference for the environment. By choosing low emission and alternative fuel vehicles, you take a step toward a greener, more sustainable future.

Shake off the shackles of traditional corporate transportation. Learn why green transport is the choice of forward-thinking businesses:

The vehicles we drive release over 1.7 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, contributing to global climate change. Each gallon of gasoline you burn creates 20 pounds of CO2. That's about 6 to 9 tons of CO2 each year for a typical vehicle. [fueleconomy.gov]

From 1990 to 2008, transportation emissions rose by 22 percent due, in large part, to increased demand for travel and the stagnation of fuel efficiency across the U.S. vehicle fleet. [2010 U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report, EPA]

Passenger cars and trucks are major contributors to air pollution. Even with continued improvements in air quality, almost 100 million people in the US still live in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution, much of which can be attributed to the increased use of passenger cars and trucks. [EPA]

Hybrids can cut fuel consumption by 30 to 50% over gas-fueled versions of the same vehicles. They can also reduce smog pollution drastically—as much as 90% over even the cleanest gasoline-only vehicles. [Green Car Buying Guide, National Geograhic]

In 2008, fossil fuel combustion accounted for 94.1% of harmful CO2 emissions in the U.S. [2010 U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report, EPA]

Transportation activities accounted for 32% of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion in 2008. Virtually all of the energy consumed in this sector came from petroleum products. Nearly 53% of the emissions resulted from gasoline consumption for personal vehicle use. [2010 U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report, EPA]

As the largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil fuel combustion has accounted for approximately 79% of global warming potential (GWP) emissions since 1990 [2010 U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report, EPA]

The largest sources of transportation green house gas emissions in 2008 were passenger cars (33%) and light duty trucks, which include sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and minivans (29%). [2010 U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report, EPA]
